Too large lag size will induce masked short-range autocorrelation, but if the lag size is too small, there may be many empty bins, within bins will be too small sample size to get representative "average" for bins. Note: a rule of thumb is that the lag size times the number of lags should be less than one-half of the largest distances in your dataset. see random short-range variation, binning
